Pirate Radio KGSF

Park University student, Jon Hokenson, is an aspiring DJ for a local radio station. Hokenson has tried to follow his dream of becoming a radio DJ, but has fallen short because he lacks experience and a college degree. After taking nearly a decade off he has returned to school and chose Park University because of their radio station. Listen to the station online here.

Now, Hokenson hosts a radio show on Pirate Radio every Tuesday from 1-5 pm. He plays a variety of music including:

Drop Kick Murphy’s

90’s Punk Rock

Current Alternative

One fan, Scott, calls the station frequently to have discussions on the air and request songs. Scott is not a student from Park University, he is a man that has stumbled across the Park radio station because he does not like to listen to main stream radio stations. He has informed Hokenson that his station reaches at least a 12 mile radius. Scott also likes the station because Hokenson does not deny any request. Scott had requested music by Lisa Gerrard, Hokenson enjoyed this request because he had not heard of this artist. He learned that she sings in her own language and while that seems odd it has worked for her. Lisa Gerrard’s music has been featured in movies and she has won a Golden Globe.

Hokenson said that Pirate Radio is so different from other stations because unlike other radio stations they are only required to play two public service announcements per hour. Listeners do not have to sit through long commercials and there is more music time.

Pirate Radio is not a 24 hour station. It is made up of volunteers that create their own schedules based on availability. You can listen to Jon Hokenson at 90.5 FM on Tuesdays from 1-5 pm. You can call Hokenson to make a request at (816) 584-6326. You can also stop in to the station room on the second floor of Copley Thaw in room 231.
